A real story from Thailand’s industrial heartland: Turning a hazardous waste crisis into a highly profitable recovery process.
The Background: A Factory Facing Shut-Down
Chonburi Province, located on Thailand’s eastern seaboard, is the beating heart of the country’s automotive and metal manufacturing industry. It is home to hundreds of die-casting and aluminum recycling plants.
Mr. Somchai, a second-generation factory owner, runs a successful secondary aluminum smelting plant here. His factory produces ADC12 aluminum alloy ingots, primarily supplying the booming local automotive parts industry. However, in early 2024, Somchai found himself in a crisis.
The Problem: The “Black Smoke” Dilemma
Somchai’s factory was using the traditional manual method to process hot dross: scooping 800°C ash from the furnace into an open iron pan, stirring it manually, and spraying it with water to cool it down.
This outdated method caused three massive problems:
-
Environmental Fines: The water spraying on the hot, oily ash created dense black smoke and a terrible odor. Following complaints from nearby residential estates, the Thai Department of Industrial Works (DIW) issued a warning and threatened to suspend his operating license.
-
Severe Metal Loss: By manually stirring the ash in the open air, the aluminum oxidized rapidly. Somchai was losing roughly 15% of recoverable metal into the ash, meaning he had to pay exorbitant fees to dispose of the hazardous waste.
-
Heat & Labor Issues: Finding workers willing to stand next to a scorching hot pan in the tropical Thai heat was almost impossible.
The Turning Point: Meeting Our Engineering Team
Desperate to solve the environmental issue, Somchai attended an industrial exhibition in Bangkok, where he met Engineer Wang from our team.
Somchai explained his fear of being shut down. Engineer Wang conducted a comprehensive virtual factory audit and realized the solution was not just about cooling the ash, but about recovering the metal before it oxidized.
The Solution: Enclosed Processing & Rapid Cooling
We proposed a compact, two-step automated solution: an 800 Model [Internal Link: Vertical Aluminum Dross Treatment Machine] combined with a [Internal Link: Screening-Type Cold Dross Bucket].
-
The Vertical Dross Machine: Installed directly next to the furnace. Hot dross is loaded into the enclosed cylinder. An automated vertical screw stirs the material with a precisely measured slagging agent. This separates the molten aluminum (which flows out of the bottom) from the dry ash.
-
The Cold Dross Bucket: The remaining dry ash is discharged directly into the cooling bucket. Through an advanced water-spray and immersion system, the ash cools from 700°C to below 50°C in minutes, completely eliminating the black smoke and stopping any further oxidation.
-
Dust Extraction: We also integrated a low-pressure pulse dust collector to ensure the entire workshop met Thailand’s strict clean air standards.

The 2024 Commissioning (March 2024)
In March 2024, Engineer Wang traveled to Chonburi to oversee the installation.
“The installation was incredibly fast,” Somchai noted. “Because the vertical machine doesn’t require a deep foundation pit, we didn’t need to rebuild our factory floor. Within a week, it was running.”
The new system was fully automated. The operators simply used a remote control to pour the hot dross and press the start button. The enclosed design meant no smoke, no flying sparks, and no dangerous manual stirring.
The Results: From Hazardous Waste to Gold
Six months after the upgrade, Somchai’s factory is thriving:
-
Compliance Achieved: The black smoke is gone. The factory passed the DIW environmental audit with flying colors.
-
12% Higher Metal Yield: The vertical machine extracts significantly more aluminum compared to manual processing. “The metal I recover from the ash in one month now covers the electricity bill for the whole factory,” Somchai laughs.
-
Lower Disposal Taxes: The final ash now has a metallic content of less than 3%, allowing Somchai to sell it as a lower-tier byproduct rather than paying top dollar for hazardous waste disposal.
-
A Safer Workplace: The workers no longer have to handle 800°C ash. They were retrained to operate the PLC touch screens.
“I thought buying a dross processing machine was just an extra cost to satisfy the government,” Somchai told Engineer Wang over a celebratory dinner. “But it turned out to be the best ROI of 2024. I am now planning to buy a second one for our new production line.”
Facing Similar Environmental or Yield Issues?
Manual dross processing is a dead end for modern aluminum factories. Whether you are in Thailand, Europe, or elsewhere, automated processing is the key to profitability and sustainability.
